WHEREAS,the rich heritage of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders spans the world and the depths of America's history as generations of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have forged a proud legacy that reflects and builds Ot upon the welcoming ideals and traditions of America;and 9 WHEREAS, a Presidential Proclamation has declared May 2015 as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month to celebrate the important impacts that have been made on our nation's progress and to honor the r perseverance of those who courageously reached for their hopes and dreams in a new land;and ; WHEREAS,the City of Rosemead, Todays Small Town America,embodies our nation's rich heritage of diversity and is proud to be home to a large base of Asian American residents and businesses;and r-f4 WHEREAS, during America's history, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders of all backgrounds have set inspiring examples as leaders and trailblazers that represent the best of our national character—from the Chinese-American laborers who risked their lives to link our coasts by rail in the 1860's to the more than one million immigrants who journeyed across the Pacific and arrived at San Francisco's Angel Island between 1910 and 1940:and WHEREAS,seventy years ago,the United States and our allies triumphed over tyranny and secured a lasting peace throughout the Asia Pacific region and much of the world through the efforts and sacrifice of patriots who fought in World War II,among whom were countless individuals of Asian and Pacific Islander descent;and WHEREAS,fifty years ago,the United States opened new doors of opportunity to more Asian and Pacific Islander immigrants through the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965, ending arbitrary and outdated policies that unfairly limited immigration from regions of the world;and WHEREAS,this year also marks the 40th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War,which brought new Vietnamese, Cambodian,Laotian and Hmong communities to this country; NOW,THEREFORE,on this twelfth day of May 2015,the Rosemead City Council hereby proclaims the month of May as"Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month"to pay tribute to all those of Asian American and Pacific Islander heritage who strive for and adhere to the traditional values of hard work,family and education, leading to a brighter future for our community,state and nation. argaret Clark,Mayor 8-70.tA,.. s4-t,,,,, 6zikt cedue.„.L Sandra Amienta,Mayor Pro Tem William Alarcon,Council Member /7,9/41 4 tow .
