PKC - Item 3D - Monthly Parks & Recreation Department Review R OSEMEAD P ARKS C OMMISSION M EMORANDUM TO: THE HONORABLE CHAIR AND PARKS COMMISSION FROM: TOM BOECKING, DIRECTOR OF PARKS & RECREATION DATE: OCTOBER 1, 2019 SUBJECT: MONTHLY DEPARTMENT UPDATE ADULT & YOUTH SPORTS Adult Basketball League The Parks and Recreation Department is excited to announce the addition of an adult basketball league. Teams will be made up of five players with games being held on Sundays at the Garvey Park Gym beginning as of January 4. This is a great opportunity for adults to become active and enjoy time with their teammates. Registration is now open! Youth Volleyball League- The Fall Youth Volleyball League kicked off their games on st September 21 at Temple Intermediate Gym. Currently, there are 3 teams enrolled with a total of 32 participants and 2 volunteer coaches. Upcoming Fall Programs- golf lessons are being offered for youth and adults and is set to begin the first week of October. The Youth Basketball Clinic begins on October 12. Children ages 3-5 will also have an opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of sports with the Start Smart Soccer beginning on October 22. Registration is now open for these upcoming programs. AQUATICS The Summer programs have ended as of September 2, 2019 with a total of 1,287 swim lesson participants over the season for both pools. The Splash Zone will remain open until the end of September. Although the Rosemead Aquatic Center is no longer open for recreational swim, it continues providing programs. Both the Rosemead High School and San Gabriel High School have begun their usage of the pool for swim practices. The aquatics staff is excited about the new offering of the Mermaid/Merman Academy for youth ages 8-16 years old. The session will run from October 5-26. Participants will have the opportunity to learn to roll, splash and swim all while wearing a swimmable fin. Parks Commission Meeting October 1, 2019 Page 2 of 4 CONTRACT CLASSES The fall recreation brochure has been completed and was delivered to homes. The publication features holiday events, adult trips & tours, Rosemead resources as well as our regularly featured information on programs for older adults, after school youth programs, and activity classes. New programs include our adult winter basketball league. Registration began on Monday, September 16. FACILITIES/PARKS Garvey Community Center- The older adults at the Garvey Center have had a very smooth transition into the fall. The older adult lunch program has grown to 85 participants as people are returning from their summer vacations. The monthly bingo social attendance also grew during the month of September with 25 participants. The arts and crafts workshop in September featured decorative owls made from cupcake wrappers. October will hold a special workshop for making wine cork pumpkins. The Garvey Center will also be hosting a Monsters Inc themed Spooktacular on October 24. The event will begin at 11:30 am in the main ballroom and will have entertainment, dancing and a costume contest. screenings of Bumblebee on October 9 and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them on October 23. As always, free popcorn will be served during the movies. Septexcursions were very well attended. We received positive comments for all of them, but the favorite seemed have been the trip to the L.A. County Fair. October will bring trips to Big Bear Lake for Oktoberfest, Medieval Times and a day in the country at Oaktree Village. There continues to be work on facility upgrades at the Garvey Center. The staff spent a day in September organizing and cleaning the basement. The area is used for storage of most community event supplies and department paperwork. With assistance from Public Works, the center staff is continuing to work on repairing the front gate to the parking lot. Rosemead Community Center- Senator Susan Rubio held a citizenship workshop on September 14 from 9:00 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Rosemead Community Center. The free workshop provided application assistance to over 100 participants. Translations were provided in various languages which included: Chinese, Hindi, Khmer, Korean, Spanish, Tagalog, Thai and Vietnamese. The Office of Senator Rubio, along with the workshop volunteers, provided helpful information and resources in becoming a U.S. citizen. Parks Commission Meeting October 1, 2019 Page 3 of 4 SPECIAL EVENTS 9/11 Memorial Ceremony - The 9/11 Memorial Ceremony was held on Wednesday, September 11 at 6:00 p.m. at the Civic Center Plaza. The ceremony commemorated the th 18 anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center. A touching tribute was given to honor the victims and the first responders who bravely sacrificed their lives. Special recognition goes out to our first responders: Los Angeles County Fire Station 4, 42 and 166 and Sheriff Temple City Station. Annual Moon Festival The celebration of the harvest moon kicked off on September 14 from 3:30 - 11:30 p.m. The event took place on Valley Boulevard between Ivar Avenue and Walnut Grove Avenue. The night included over 120 merchandise and food vendors. A wonderful opening ceremony took place at 6:00 p.m. recognizing the individuals helping to put together this grand event. Cultural performances and entertainment took place throughout the day. Participants enjoyed the mooncake giveaway that took place on the stage. There were over 6,000 participants in attendance. Fall Fiesta/ Día de los Muertos The event will be held on Saturday, October 12 from 4:00-9:00 p.m. at Rosemead Park. If rained out, the reschedule date is November 16 from 2:00-7:00 p.m. This day will be filled with family fun including live entertainment, community performances, carnival games, laser tag, moon bouncers, arts & crafts and an outdoor movie The Book of Life. Food and merchandise vendors will be available. Trunk or Treat & Haunted House If you are looking for a spooky good time, join the th 6 Annual Trunk or Treat on October 31 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at the Rosemead Community Center. Children will be able to pick out goodies from the trunks of decorated cars, partake in a costume contest, watch an outdoor movie Monsters University, play carnival games and enjoy arts & crafts. Food trucks will be available serving food and treats for purchase. For a chilling experience, the Haunted House will be open from 5:30-8:30 p.m. on October 25, 26, and 31. The recommended age is for 7 and up. Applications for a car entry are available and candy donations are appreciated. th 10 Annual Fitness Day and Health Fair The health fair will be held at the Rosemead Community Center on November 17 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The admission is free and open to all. The event will feature health screenings, demonstrations, medical consultations, senior haircuts and activities. There will also be plenty of goodies and giveaways. Parks Commission Meeting October 1, 2019 Page 4 of 4 DEPARTMENT ITEMS Second Temporary Community Garden Staff is currently working with the Public Department on a draft design for the garden. A draft design will be presented to the Commission once completed. Staff is hopeful the garden will open in early 2020.
