PKC - Item 3C - Monthly Department Update R OSEMEAD P ARKS C OMMISSION M EMORANDUM TO: THE HONORABLE CHAIR AND PARKS COMMISSION FROM: TOM BOECKING, DIRECTOR OF PARKS & RECREATION DATE: NOVEMBER 5, 2019 SUBJECT: MONTHLY DEPARTMENT UPDATE ADULT & YOUTH PROGRAMS Adult Basketball League The Parks and Recreation Department is now offering a new 5 vs. 5 Adult Basketball league that will be held on Sundays, beginning January 4 at Garvey Park Gym. If you are looking to get back on the court, sign up today! Team registration is now open. Youth Basketball - The Youth Basketball Clinic began its Fall session on October 12 for ages 6-14 years old. There was a total of 30 participants. Youth Winter Basketball League registration is now open, and we have 72 participants already registered. The league is set to begin December 9. Youth Volleyball League - The Youth Volleyball League is halfway through the Fall season. The league will conclude on November 16. Start Smart Program - The Start Smart Soccer, for ages 3-5 years old, kicked off their Fall session on October 22. The class is full with a total of 20 participants. Playschool - Both the Garvey and Rosemead Playschool held an open house at each facility on Thursday, September 26 from 5 - 7 p.m. Cookies and water were available for those in attendance. The event was successful at both facilities, with new students enrolling in the second Fall session. Playschool ended its first Fall session on October 10. Fall session two begins on October 28 at both Garvey Center and Rosemead Park locations. Upcoming Fall Programs - Winter Break is right around the corner and registration for credible Pizza and the California Science Center for their weekly excursion. Parks Commission Meeting October 1, 2019 Page 2 of 3 AQUATICS Fall swim lessons started this month at the Rosemead Aquatic Center. Parent Tot classes have been filled to capacity. Rosemead Rapids are off to a great start this month with 115 paid participants for the month of October. Mermaid/Merman Academy is now being offered. The new fun mermaid/merman class will give students the opportunity to swim as the Mer people do, along with fun filled activities. Fall classes did not fill up, but we are hopeful the word will get out and the Spring classes will fill. New pool tarps were delivered to the Rosemead Aquatic Center on October 15. The tarps were donated by The Newhall Land and Farming Company and were installed by Knorr Systems INC. New tarps would have cost the city thousands of dollars. We were very fortunate that Knorr Systems introduced us to the donors. Knorr will also be conducting an Aquatic staff training to ensure staff can properly install and remove the tarps. FACILITIES/PARKS Garvey Community Center- Participants at the Garvey Center took part in the Great ShakeOut on Thursday, October 17. The Great ShakeOut is a state-wide earthquake drill. There were approximately 50 older adults who participated in the drill. They did well with the drop, cover and hold drill and evacuated quickly to the meeting site located on the North parking lot. Garvey Center staff did a tremendous job in coordinating and executing the drill. Attendance for the lunch program and monthly bingo stayed steady during the month of October. The arts and crafts workshop for the month also stayed steady. The group made Halloween pumpkins out of wine corks. The Garvey Center hosted a Monsters Inc themed Spooktacular on October 24. The event consisted of lunch, entertainment, dancing and a costume contest. The coming months will be very exciting at the Garvey Center as staff gears up for the holidays. The older adult excursions went very well during the month of October. The trip to Big Bear for their annual Oktoberfest seemed to be the popular choice. Travelers will have a chance to enjoy excursions to Old Town San Diego and Camarillo in November. Upgrades continue at the Garvey Center. Staff is working on replacing lighting in two of the rooms to LED lighting. The center will also have a new water fountain/water bottle fill station installed during November. The new additions are sure to be a hit with all the patrons at the Garvey Center. Garvey Park- The Garvey Park restroom renovation project will begin on Friday, November 1. The project is expected to be completed by the Spring of 2020. Due to Parks Commission Meeting October 1, 2019 Page 3 of 3 construction, the restrooms will be closed until completion, however, the snack bar restrooms by the softball/baseball fields will be available for park users. Rosemead Community Center - Wealth by Health Free Clinic - A free medical clinic will be held at the Rosemead Community Center on November 3 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The event will provide teeth filling and cleaning, family medicine and cardiology, eye exams, acupuncture and massage therapy and the opportunity to receive flu shots. This wonderful free service is being provided by Wealth by Health Steps for Change Foundation. SPECIAL EVENTS Fall Fiesta/ Día de los Muertos The event was held on Saturday, October 12 from 4:00-9:00 p.m. at Rosemead Park. The day was filed with lots of family fun which included live entertainment, community performances, carnival games, laser tag, moon bouncers, arts & crafts and an outdoor movie The Book of Life. There were delicious food vendors providing an assortment of food as well as merchandise vendors selling fun items. The estimated attendance for the event was 1500 people. th 10 Annual Fitness Day and Health Fair The health fair will be held at the Rosemead Community Center on November 17 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The admission is free and open to all. The event will feature health screenings, demonstrations, medical consultations, senior haircuts and activities. There will also be plenty of goodies and giveaways. Annual Tree Lighting and Dinner with Santa The Tree Lighting and Dinner with Santa will be held on Tuesday, December 3 at 6:00 p.m. The Tree Lighting will take place at the Rosemead Civic Plaza and the dinner will be held at the Rosemead Community Center. There will be an opportunity to take a photo with Santa as well as activities and rides for children to enjoy. As custom, hot chocolate will be provided.
