PKC - Item 3C - Monthly Department Update R OSEMEAD P ARKS C OMMISSION M EMORANDUM TO: THE HONORABLE CHAIR AND PARKS COMMISSION FROM: TOM BOECKING, DIRECTOR OF PARKS & RECREATION DATE: JANUARY 7, 2019 SUBJECT: MONTHLY DEPARTMENT UPDATE ADULT & YOUTH PROGRAMS Adult Basketball League The Parks and Recreation Department is now offering a new 5 vs. 5 Adult Basketball League that will be held on Sundays and begins January 4 at the Garvey Park Gym. If you are looking to get back on the court, sign up today! Team registration is now open. Adult Kendo Fencing A brand new class for adults is now being offered, Kendo Fencing will be held on Saturday mornings from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. beginning January 11 at the Garvey Park Gym. The City of Rosemead will be hosting its first Jr. NBA Skills Challenge Local Competition for kids ages 13 years and under. They will have the opportunity to compete for a chance to win an all-expense paid trip to New York City. The three finishers in each age and gender group will advance to the Regional Competition. The local competition is FREE to all participants and will be held at the Garvey Park Gym on Friday, January 17 from 6:00 8:00 p.m. Youth Basketball League The Winter Youth Basketball League kicked off their practices on th Monday, December 9 with 16 teams and 149 participants. Games will begin on Saturday, th January 4 at Garvey Intermediate School. Youth Volleyball League The Youth Volleyball league concluded their Fall 2020 season on Saturday, November 16. The league consisted of 3 teams with 32 participants and two parent volunteer coaches. Playschool - The playschools prepared for weeks to sing at the Tree Lighting Ceremony which was held on December 3. The children sang their little hearts out to the enjoyment of their parents and those who came to the event. Santa made a special visit to both sites on December 11. The children and their teachers were thrilled to see Saint Nick who of course came barring Parks Commission Meeting October 1, 2019 Page 2 of 3 candy canes for all. Rosie the mischievous elf also made a visit to both sites and stirred up some trouble while there. The last day for the Fall program for playschool ended on Thursday, December 12. The winter session will begin on January 6, 2020. AQUATICS The Rosemead Aquatic Center will be closed for the holidays from December 21- January 5. Staff will be in to do some much needed annual maintenance. The pool will re-open for the new year on January 6, 2020. The Rosemead Rapids have had continuous high participation in the swim team with 133 swimmers in October, 132 in November, and 125 in December. FACILITIES/PARKS Garvey Community Center- Participants at the Garvey Center were very busy during the months of November and December. The Garvey Center was able to give away turkeys to some of the older adults in need of assistance this past holiday season through a contribution made by the office of Congresswoman Judy Chu. There were 10 turkeys in total that staff was able to distribute. The center also hosted an ugly sweater party during the older adult lunch program. There were 99 participants in attendance where 5 lucky winners took home gift cards for their creative sweaters. January will be a quiet month, but the center will continue to host its regular activities of arts and crafts, bingo and movie days. The older adult excursions continued to do well during the months of November and December. Trips to Old Town San Diego, the Tamale Festival, Holiday Lights at the Riverside Mission Inn and at the Harbor Cruise in Huntington Beach were very well attended. New excursions for 2020 have been scheduled and registration will open on January 6. First excursion will be to Valley View Casino on February 5. With a generous donation from Temple City residents, the Garvey Center was able to acquire new tables for the sewing classes. The center has also added a new bingo console and board. Rosemead Community Center Los Angeles County is improving how we vote! Demonstrations of the new voting system were held at the Rosemead Community Center from December 4-21, 2019 to allow residents to experience the new system. SPECIAL EVENTS Annual Tree Lighting and Dinner with Santa The Tree Lighting and Dinner with Santa was held on Tuesday, December 3 at 6:00 p.m. The Tree Lighting featured a cappella performances, joyous signing from the preschoolers and a festive dancing group. The rain did not stop the festivities, the evening continued at the Rosemead Civic Plaza with free hot cocoa and mini conchas, which were donated by El Pavo Bakery. The fun also included train rides, snow slides, Parks Commission Meeting October 1, 2019 Page 3 of 3 arts & crafts, an indoor movie and the Dinner with Santa. Children and families were able to walk away with a memory of the event through the photo opportunity with Santa which was provided. Sweethearts Jamboree The event will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2020 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Rosemead Community Center. The event will include bingo, lunch and dancing. The cost of the event is $10 per person. Community Yard Sale The Community Yard Sale is set for Saturday, March 7, 2020 from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Southern California Edison Parking Lot. Vendor applications will be available as of January 6 at the Rosemead Community Center with a deadline of February 28. In case of rain, a reschedule date has been set for March 14.
