SUBJECT; MEMORIAL BENCH,TREE AND GARDEN NOMINATION
SUMMARY
On Monday, September 14, 2020 the Parks and Recreation Department received an application
for the Memorial Bench, Tree and Garden Program. The donor, Vicki Waier, would like to
recognize her niece, Amanda Elaine Martin,by dedicating an existing tree at Garvey Park.
STAFF RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that the Parks Commission approve the memorial tree application to honor
Amanda Elaine Martin.
DISCUSSION
Amanda Elaine Martin was raised in Rosemead. She attended Shuey Elementary, Muscatel
Middle School and graduated from Rosemead High School in 2007. Amanda was active in our
community playing softball for the Rosemead Youth Association at Garvey Park for many years.
At Rosemead High School, she was involved in many clubs and played softball. Amanda passed
away on August 17, 2020 after a long battle with cancer.
Amanda is survived by her husband, Nick, her mother, Corrine, and her brother Matthew. She
will always be remembered as a beautiful, positive and lovely woman who is greatly missed by
everyone who knew her.
The family would like to recognize Amanda by dedicating an existing tree located near the
softball field at Garvey Park.
FISCAL IMPACT
The cost to the donor would be $350 for the memorial tree. All costs associated with the
memorial tree will be paid by the donor,Vicki Waier.

Amanda Elaine Martin was born on June 8, 1989 and lived in Rosemead her whole life until her death on August
21,2020. She attended Shuy Elementary, Musctel Junior High and Rosemead High School where she played on the
high school softball team. Amanda graduated Rosemead High School in 2007 and went on to play softball for the
RYA Softball team, playing at Garvey Park. Amanda and her husband, Nick,often went for walks in Garvey Park
and shared their first kiss at the park.
Amanda was diagnosed with breast cancer, May 2019,and underwent extensive chemo and radiation. She had a
mastectomy in Dec.2019, but always remained positive she would beat it and live a long,healthy life. In July 2020,
after having a series of migraines,City of Hope did an MRI and found the cancer had spread to her brain and to her
ovaries. On August 11th,Amanda underwent brain surgery,which took 11-1/2 hours. She was released from City
of Hope on August 15th. After she returned home,she had several seizures and was pronounced brain dead on
August 17th
Amanda is survived by her mother,Corrine,her brother, Matthew,and her husband, Nick. She will always be
remembered as a beautiful, positive,lovely woman who will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.
We would love to have the memorial plaque at the park where she played the sport she loved and where she
shared her first kiss with the man she loved.
