COVID-19 UPDATE
Fall Programs—The new Fall 2020 Community Guide is available online. Due to the restrictions
that are still in place, the Parks and Recreation Department has gotten creative with class
offerings by proving classes online or outdoors with social distancing protocols in place. Rather
than cancel, the Rosemead team has put a clever spin on events to ensure residents are still
able to enjoy these memorable and long-awaited events.
AQUATICS
The aquatic staff continue to come in weekly for facility maintenance to ensure all equipment
and water features are running properly. The Rosemead Aquatic Center is scheduled to open in
October with limited programming in order to ensure the safety of our patrons and staff. Aqua
Aerobics and Lap Swim will be available by reservation only. We are happy to announce that
our Rosemead Rapids Swim Team will also be resuming practices in October.
FACILITIES/PARKS
Garvey Community Center- City staff continue to make improvements to the facility while the
Garvey Center is closed to the public. Public Works staff are still working on upgrading lighting
and small cosmetic issues around the facility. The IT Department is working on upgrading the
camera system, as well as the WIFI in the building. The Center has also added some new
banquet chairs to be used once it is open to the public for private events.
The Center continues to host meal distributions for the older adult participants twice a week.
Summer hours for meal distribution will stay in effect thru Monday, November 2, 2020. The
Senior Lunch Program will begin serving at 10:30 am, instead of 11:30 am. Center staff has
been distributing 160 meals a day to older adults in need. MTA bus pass reloading has also
continued for Rosemead residents. The number of residents reloading their bus pass has been
low, as most MTA drivers are allowing passengers to ride for free during this pandemic. The
staff has planned fun days to make things a little more enjoyable during meal distribution.

Monday, September 28. All participants were given their meals in a fun, Batman themed,
drawstring backpack and staff wore their best Batman gear. The Center partnered with a local
Starbucks for Coffee Day. Each participant was given an iced coffee, delivered to them by
Starbucks staff. Staff continues to do a great job with the bi-weekly activity book. It is full of
helpful information, puzzles, comics and recipes. The activity books were handed out on
September 9 and 23. The next edition is due out on October 7.
The Garvey Community Center continues to partner with the LA Food Bank and will be
distributing 200 boxes of food to participating older adults. The next distribution day is
scheduled for Monday, October 26.
Los Angeles County Vote Centers — The Rosemead Community Recreation Center and the
Garvey Center will be used as voting centers by the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder
Office. The voting period will begin October 24 thru November 3, 2020.
SPECIAL EVENTS
Farmers Market —The Farmers Market has concluded as of Monday, September 28. We look
forward to the start of the Farmers Market next spring.
Drive-Thru Flu Clinic - Wealth by Health will be hosting a drive-thru flu clinic on Saturday,
October 10 from 9:00 am — 3:00 pm at the Rosemead Community Center. It will be first come,
first served with the opportunity for dental services which are by appointment only.
Fall Fiesta —The date is quickly approaching with lots of fun planned! Register today to attend
the Fall Fiesta/Dia de los Muertos Drive-in Movie on Saturday, October 10 at Rosemead Park!
We will be screening the beloved movie "Coco". The cost is $10 per vehicle. Doors will open at
5:30 pm and the movie will begin at 7:00 pm.
Virtual 5k Run/Walk— Lace up your tennis shoes and run, jog or walk in a virtual race through
Rosemead. This event can be completed between October 17 - 23. We are asking all
participants to tag Rosemead in a social media post to be entered into a raffle. Participants can
be entered into a second raffle by showing their Halloween spirit and racing in their favorite
costume.The fee to register is $20 which includes the race bib, finisher medal and a
commemorative face mask.
Spooktacular Halloween Drive-Thru Event— With safety in mind, the Trunk or Treat has been
modified as a drive-thru event. It will be held at the Rosemead Community Center on October
31 from 6:00 — 8:30 pm. Children under the age of 18 will receive a bag full of treats. As a
special treat, there will be a greenscreen for a chance to take a commemorative photo. Along
with the Halloween event, will be a virtual haunted house which will be available starting
October 23 through the 31.

Pedal for the Turkey Medal 5k Virtual Bike Ride - Hop on your favorite bike or stationary bike
and join us for our first ever Pedal for the Turkey Medal Virtual 5k Bike Ride. This is a virtual
bike ride, so choose whenever and wherever you want to earn your turkey medal. Race packets
will include a custom race bib, T-Shirt and a Thanksgiving themed turkey medal. Packets will be
delivered beginning November 20.
YOUTH PROGRAMS
The Youth Sports Division is gearing up for some new fall programs that will be offered in
person with social distancing guidelines and virtual classes that can be done right from home.
Below are the new and exciting programs that will be offered:
Football Sports in a Bag - Our Football Sports in a Bag program is designed for parents to
participate with their child/ren and teach them the fundamental skills of Football right from
home. Each bag will include a Rosemead youth sports drawstring backpack along with the
sports equipment needed for the program. Each week, Recreation Staff will include an
instructional video to assist parents with teaching the various drills. Bags are limited and will be
delivered the week of October 5.
Halloween and Thanksgiving Camp Rosemead in a Box - Camp Rosemead in a Box will include
one-week of fun and exciting activities that can be done from home! Each themed box will
include arts & craft, games, physical fitness activities, as well as, weekly virtual excursions.
Camp boxes are limited! If both boxes are purchased, participants will receive a FREE Camp
Rosemead T-Shirt! Camp boxes will be delivered on Oct. 26 & Nov. 23.
NBA 2K20 Youth E-Sports League -The all NEW E-Sports Youth League provides an organized,
safe and fun online sports gaming experience from home. Like traditional sports leagues,
participants will play against other opponents each week and standings will be kept by the
Recreation Staff. League play will conclude with a one-day single elimination tournament at the
end of the season. Register for FREE online at www.cityofrosemead.org. League begins October
10! Note: Participants must provide their own equipment.
Youth Outdoor Volleyball Clinic - Looking to learn the fundamental skills of Volleyball? Join us
in our New Fall Outdoor Youth Volleyball Clinic! Boys and Girls ages 8-14 will learn the
fundamental skills of bumping, serving, hitting, teamwork and sportsmanship. Beginners are
welcome! Clinic begins October 11.
Youth Baseball/Softball Skill's Competition League - Sign up now for our NEW Youth
Baseball/Softball Skill's Competition League. Boys and girls ages 6-14 will learn sportsmanship,
strategy and fundamental skills of running, hitting and pitching. Similar to traditional sports
leagues, participants will compete against other opponents each week (scheduled Individually).

Points will be scored based on pitching, hitting and running. League play will conclude with a
one-day single elimination tournament. Registration includes a medal and t-shirt.
GRANT UPDATE
Proposition 68: Founder's Park - The State of California, Department of Parks and Recreation
notified staff that the proposed "Founder's Park" was not selected as a funded project in this
round of the Proposition 68 competitive grant program. The State received 478 applications
which equaled a total of $2.3 billion in requests. The amount requested greatly exceeded the
$254.9 million available in this round. A total of 90% of the applications did not receive funding
with only 15 projects funded in Los Angeles County.
Final Round of Proposition 68: Final Round —The State of California, Department of Parks and
Recreation released the last and final round of competitive grants for Proposition 68. This final
round will offer $395 million in grant money. Grant applications are due December 14, 2020.
Staff is currently evaluating potential projects that might be eligible.
