SUBJECT: MONTHLY DEPARTMENT UPDATE
The Department of Parks and Recreation is preparing for the coming fall. We look forward to
bringing back some of our traditional events like Fall Fiesta/Dia de los Muertos and Trunk or
Treat as well as the introduction of new events such as the Pumpkin Dive. Registration for
classes is set to begin on August 18 with our brochure being sent to homes the week of August
9. Brochures will also be available online as of August 9.
AQUATICS
Monday July 12 started the third session of summer youth swim lessons. With restrictions
lifted, we had the ability to increase the number of participants from four to seven participants
per class. This has helped tremendously as it gave us the opportunity to serve more people in
our community with a total of 105 swimmers for session three. This was an increase of 41
participants as the previous session only had 64 participants. We anticipate another increase in
participation for session four which begins on July 26. We continue to offer Lap Swim Monday -
Friday 12:00 pm -2:00 pm and Saturdays from 10:00 am -12:00 pm. Aqua Fit is offered Mondays
and Wednesdays from 3:00 pm -3:40 pm. Both Lap Swim and Aqua Fit no longer require a
reservation. On July 6, The Rosemead Aquatic Center opened for recreation swim, Tuesday and
Thursday from 6:15 pm -8:15 pm as well as Friday from 1:45 pm- 3:4 5pm, which is very much in
demand due to the high temperatures. This week, the Rosemead Aquatic Center has seen an
average of 200 patrons, per time slot, for recreation swim. The Rosemead Rapids Swim Team
was able to adjust their schedule to accommodate recreation swim. The swim team has also
seen an increase in participation since restrictions lifted. Currently, there are 95 swimmers for
the month of July, which is 14 more swimmers than the previous month.
Rosemead Rapids Swimmers - The Rosemead Rapids swimmers are heading to three major
championship meets in 2021, the Southern California Swimming Junior Olympics Championship,
Nevada Speedo Sectionals Championship, and the USA Swimming Futures Championship.
• The Southern California Swimming Junior Olympics Championship is the top age group
meet in Southern California. To compete in the Junior Olympics, swimmers must achieve
qualifying times which is no easy task. This year 21 Rapid swimmers qualified for this

event. They will be competing next week, July 22nd through July 25th, in the City of
Santa Clarita.
• The Nevada Speedo Sectionals Championship is an entry-level national competition. This
meet brings out the swimmers with the fastest qualifying times. This season there is a
total of nine swimmers that qualified for individual events and relays. Swimmers from
California and Nevada will be competing on July 15th through July 18th in the City of
Fullerton.
• The USA Swimming Futures Championships is a national -level competition. Swimmers
from the western United States will compete at this meet. They will be competing on
July 18th through July 31st in the City of Santa Clarita. This year there is a total of four
swimmers that qualified for individual events and a relay.
FACILITIES/PARKS
Garvey Community Center- The Drive -and -Go Lunch Program is continuing to operate even
though the facility is open to the general public. The Garvey Community Center Staff continues
to do a great job in serving meals to the community on Mondays and Wednesdays. Meals are
still being distributed at 10:00 am in an effort to beat the summer heat. The program serves
160 meals, with each participant receiving either a frozen meal or fresh deli meals.
Indoor dining will reconvene beginning Monday, August 9. The Center has opened for a limited
number of classes and senior club meetings. All who enter the facility are asked to follow the
indoor mask mandate and staff is constantly cleaning the reception area and other rooms that
are in use. The Garvey Community Center will host its first indoor bingo social in over a year.
Regular participants have expressed their anticipation and excitement for the return to
"normal." A new set of classes will begin the second week of September and staff is expecting
a very busy fall season.
The Garvey Community Center continues to receive two hundred food boxes from the L.A. Food
Bank. They changed the fruit choice in July, as participants received bags of apples this time
around. The next food box distribution will take place Monday, September 6.
Rosemead Community Recreation Center - The Rosemead Community Recreation Center is
open to the public and has been busy booking rentals of the facility. Classes are now being held
indoors, which is especially important given the rise in temperature.
SPECIAL EVENTS
Virtual Family Trivia Night — The second Virtual Family Trivia Night is being held on Thursday,
July 29 at 7:00 p.m. The trivia theme for the night will feature Disney Princesses, Marvel and
Star Wars. There will be a raffle in between categories along with gift cards for the category
winners. There was a total of 34 participants enrolled for the event.

Rosemead Summer Nights - The department planned a month-long series which includes
concerts and movies in the park. Events being held in July will also celebrate the Park Makes
Life Better month with goodies and giveaways.
Friday, July 23, 2021— Movie in the Park
Our first outdoor Movie in the Park had a great turnout at Rosemead Park on Friday, July 231
The featured movie for the night was Raya and the Last Dragon. Parks and Recreation
celebrated Parks Make Life better month with free giveaways to the kids and a commemorative
photo for families to download on our city website. The event was well received with
approximately 150 people in attendance.
Friday, July 30, 2021— Concert in the Park/Mobile Vaccine Clinic
Staff is excited for the first summer concert featuring Joyas Prestada, a tribute band to Jenni
Rivera. The concert will take place at Rosemead Park and will begin 7:00 pm. In partnership
with Chair Supervisor Hilda Solis and CSC Health (Chinatown Service Center -Community Health
Clinic), we will also be hosting a mobile vaccine clinic concurrent to the concert event at
Rosemead Park. The clinic will operate from 5:30-8:30 pm and will be offering 3 vaccine
options. There is no appointment needed. Free Six Flags Magic Mountain tickets will be given
with each vaccine.
Friday, August 6, 2021 — Movie in the Park
Enjoy an evening under the stars at Rosemead Park. The Department of Parks and Recreation
will be featuring Onward at 8:00 pm. There will be a photo booth available from 6:30-7:30 pm
along with giveaways from our Parks and Recreation staff. Moviegoers are encouraged to bring
snacks, chairs, and blankets for the event.
Friday, August 13, 2021 — Concert in the Park
This concert will feature the amazing sounds of the LA Sound Machine, a tribute band to the
Miami Sound Machine. This band is known for their popular 80's and 90's pop chart music hits.
The concert will take place at Rosemead Park and will begin at 7:00 pm.
9/11 Memorial Ceremony - The City will commemorate the events of September 11, with a
Remembrance Ceremony on Saturday, September 11, beginning at 10:00 a.m. This year marks
the 20 years of the terrorist attack on the nation. The ceremony will include flag raising and
wreath laying ceremonies as well as performance of Taps. We will gather adjacent to
Rosemead's 9/11 Memorial Sculpture in the Civic Center Plaza at 8838 E. Valley Boulevard.
YOUTH PROGRAMS AND SPORTS
Start Smart Soccer —Start Smart Soccer concluded its last class on Saturday, July 31 with a total
of 15 participants. Kids ages 3-5 were excited to be back in sports and can't wait for the next
session in the fall featuring football.

Summer Camp Rosemead — Summer Camp Rosemead is almost done for the summer! The
camp is set to conclude on August 13 as kids are returning back to school for the 2021-2022
school year. The program brought in a total of 170 participants for the summer.
Youth Group Tennis Lessons — Johnny Allen Tennis is going into its 3 d session for the summer
with a total of 50 participants. Class is scheduled once a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays at
Garvey Park Tennis Courts. Participants are excited to join in the fall classes as well.
Youth Group Golf Lessons — SCGA Jr Golf kicked off its first class during the week of July 12th
with a total of 38 kids for the summer. Parent and kids were very excited to participate in this
new class!
Spring Youth Sports Clinics — Outdoor Youth Basketball and Volleyball Clinics concluded on
Saturday, July 31 with a total of 65 participants. Parks and Recreation will be offering a fall
session for the Basketball Clinic and bringing back the Volleyball League for Fall 2021.
