PKC - Item 3B - Monthly Parks and Recreation Department ReviewROSEMEAD PARKS COMMISSION MEMORANDUM TO: THE HONORABLE CHAIR AND PARKS COMMISSION FROM: TOM BOECKING, DIRECTOR OF PARKS & RECREATION DATE: OCTOBER 5, 2021 SUBJECT: MONTHLY DEPARTMENT UPDATE Fall classes and programs began on September 7 with many returning to in person programming. The Department of Parks and Recreation is moving forward with planning the regular annual events but continuing to monitor CDC and LA County Department of Public Health guidelines. AQUATICS Youth fall swim lessons started on Saturday, September 18 and will end on October 9. There was a total of 60 participants enrolled for the lessons. The fall brought about the start of adult swim lessons with the first session being held from September 7- 16 with a full class. Session two of adult swim lessons began on Tuesday, September 21 and will end on September 30. The Rosemead Rapids Swim Team began a new practice schedule this month. The swim team will be practicing Monday -Friday 5:00 to 8:00 pm and Saturdays from 8:00 am to 10:00 pm. There was a total of 107 participants for the month of September. FACILITIES/PARKS Community Gardens - CultivaLA and the Parks and Recreation Department hosted a Meet and Greet event for garden members on Saturday, September 18 at the 2nd Temporary Community Garden. All the current plot owners at both gardens were invited to the event, with a great turnout in attendance. Cultival-A is a non-profit organization that has partnered with the City to help develop the garden and teach the community about healthy food access and sustainability. The garden is well underway with nearly all plots filled. Given the demand, there were additional plots added. Currently, the garden is in phase 2 which is creating community and ownership of the space by garden members as well as incorporating an educational component for both youth and adults. The goal is also to partner with local schools and provide an educational component and hands-on experience. Garvey Community Center- The Garvey Community Center is now fully open for programs, activities, and rentals. Anyone entering the facility will be asked to follow the indoor mask Parks Commission Meeting October 5, 2021 Page 2 of 4 mandate. Classes at the center for both youth and adults are now in session. The classes are currently on the 41h week of the session. Senior Bingo was held on September 1 with all participants receiving 4 bingo cards, a light snack, and a refreshing beverage. All bingo winners received a choice of a $5.00 gift card to Starbucks, Taco Bell, Carl's Jr., In -N -Out or Denny's. The overall winner received a $20.00 gift card to Walmart. The senior crafts activity was held on Tuesday, September 13 with 20 participants in attendance. The activity included a canvas painting along with a flowerpot. Also, the center continues to receive food boxes from the L.A. Food Bank. The next food box distribution will take place on Monday, October 4, 2021. Rosemead Community Recreation Center - The Rosemead Community Recreation served as a voting center from Saturday, September 11 through Tuesday, September 14. The process was smooth with many people in attendance for both in person and drop off voting. Wealth by Health will be providing a vaccination clinic at the Rosemead Community Recreation Center and will be offering both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. The clinic will operate starting Sunday, September 12, and every three weeks thereafter on Sundays. The dates for the vaccines are as follows: October 3 and 24, November 14, and December 5. The hours of operation will be from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm with no appointment needed. Vaccinations are open to the public. SPECIAL EVENTS 9/11 Memorial Ceremony - The City commemorated the 20th anniversary of 9/11 with a Remembrance Ceremony on Saturday, September 11, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. The event included a flag raising and wreath laying ceremony, a performance of Taps as well as a tribute to those who lost their lives on that tragic day. The ceremony took place by Rosemead's 9/11 Memorial Sculpture in the Civic Center Plaza with heartfelt remarks by our City Council, Senator Susan Rubio, and Congresswoman Judy Chu. Fall Fiesta/Dia de los Muertos — Mark your calendars for the long-awaited Fall Fiesta/Dia de los Muertos. The event is scheduled for Saturday, October 9 from 4:00 to 9:00 pm at Rosemead Park and will include live entertainment, food vendors, trinket vendors, laser tag, rock roll, moon bouncers, games, and plenty of other activities for the entire family to enjoy. In case of rain, a rainout date has been scheduled for November 13 from 3:00 to 7:00 pm. Pumpkin Dive — Rosemead Aquatics is excited to announce its first Pumpkin Dive. The Pumpkin Dive will be held on October 16 from 12:00 to 3:00 pm at the Rosemead Aquatic Center. Imagine swimming amongst floating pumpkins, picking out the perfect one and then moving into a decorating station to add the finishing touches; that is the Pumpkin Dive experience. The event is for Children ages 3-16 years old. The space for the event is limited with pre -registration required. A small fee of $10 will be charged per youth. 2 Parks Commission Meeting October 51 2021 Page 3 of 4 Pumpkin Patch - Join us on Saturday, October 23 as the Parks and Recreation Department partners with CultivaLA to host a pumpkin patch. The event will place at the 2nd Community Garden from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Participants will have the opportunity to pick their own pumpkin to carve as well as a slice of pie. Reservations are required as parking is limited. There is no formal program scheduled for this event. If you have any questions, please contact Director of Parks and Recreation Tom Boecking or me. Trunk or Treat — We invite the community to come out for a spine -tingling good time on Saturday, October 30 from 5:30 to 8:30 pm at the Rosemead Community Center. The Trunk or Treat event will give children the opportunity to walk from car to car and pick up goodies and treats during the Trunk or Treat event. The evening will also include carnival games, an outdoor movie, arts & crafts, a costume contest, a maze, and a photo op area. The categories are for children and dogs. Virtual Family Trivia Night — The Virtual Family Trivia Night was held on Friday, September 17 at 7 pm with 11 families enrolled. The theme for the game night was on Rosemead knowledge and how well participants knew the city. Raffles were held with prizes that included Rosemead swag bags and goodies. The event went extremely well with accolades being received from the participants for the organization of the event. Gift cards were awarded for 1st through 3rd place winners. ADULT/YOUTH PROGRAMS AND SPORTS Adult Basketball League —The Adult Basketball League returned on Sunday, September 19 with a total of 8 Teams! Games are held on Sundays between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm at the Garvey Park Gym. Youth Golf Group Lessons — After a huge turnout for our first Youth Golf Group Lessons this Summer, SCGA Jr. Golf is returning to offer golf lessons for fall 2021. Classes are being held on Saturdays and Sundays at Whittier Narrows Golf Course. There are currently 30 participants registered for the fall session. Youth Tennis Group Lessons —The Youth Tennis Group Lessons are gearing up for the Fall 2021 season at Garvey Park. Classes are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 5:00 and 9:00 pm at the Garvey Park Tennis Courts. There are currently 15 participants registered for the first session. Youth Volleyball Clinic — The Fall 2021 Youth Volleyball Clinic kicked off its first day on Saturday, September 18 with a total of 37 participants. The clinic is held on Saturdays between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm at the Garvey Park Gym. 3 Parks Commission Meeting October 5, 2021 Page 4 of 4 UPDATES Garvey Park Dog Park — A request for proposal has been published for the design engineering services to prepare plans, specifications, and estimates, as well as construction management and inspection services for the dog park at Garvey Park. Bids are due on October 20, 2021- This is the next step in the development of the project. 9 Parks Commission Meeting October 5, 2021 Page 2 of 2 Pumpkin Patch - The Parks and Recreation Department has partnered with CultivaLA to host a new Pumpkin Patch event. The event will take place at the 2nd Community Garden on Saturday, October 23 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Participants will have the opportunity to pick their own pumpkin to carve, as well as enjoy a slice of pie. Reservations are required as parking is limited. Trunk or Treat — The Department will be hosting its annual Trunk or Treat event on Saturday, October 30, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Children will be able to pick out goodies from the trunks of decorated cars, partake in a costume contest, watch an outdoor movie, play carnival games, and enjoy arts and crafts. Food trucks will be available, serving treats and food for purchase.
