CC - Item 4C - Adding Fire Prevention Month Proclamation to the List of Approved List of ProclamationsROSEMEAD CITY COUNCIL STAFF REPORT TO: THE HONORABLE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL FROM: BEN KIM, CITY MANAGER 0A - DATE: SEPTEMBER 27, 2022 SUBJECT: ADDING FIRE PREVENTION MONTH PROCLAMATION TO THE APPROVED LIST OF PROCLAMATIONS SUMMARY City staff is requesting to add Fire Prevention Month to the list of approved proclamations. Per the approved procedures by the City Council in 2021, any proclamations not listed will be presented to the City Council for approval before officially declaring the proclamation at a subsequent meeting. DISCUSSION Proclamations are ceremonial documents to honor an individual or organization, celebrate or create awareness or commemorate a particular day, month, or year. Proclamations are designated by a specific event and date. On June 14, 2021, the City Council approved a new procedure to issue any future proclamations: • Proclamations on the list of Approved Proclamations will be automatically agendized under Presentations without City Council discussion. • New proclamation requests not listed on the approved list of proclamations will be agendized for discussion and City Council direction. If approved, the new proclamation will be agendized and presented at the next City Council meeting and added to the approved list of proclamations. STAFF RECOMMENDATION That the City Council discuss and approve adding the Fire Prevention Month Proclamation to the list of Approved Proclamations. Prepared and submitted by: Ericka Hernandez, City Clerk Attachment A: Fire Prevention Month Proclamation Attachment B: 2022 Approved List of Proclamations Attachment A Fire Prevention Month Proclamation PROCLAIMING THE MONTH OF OCTOBER, AS FIRE PREVENTION MONTH WHEREAS the Los Angeles County Fire Department is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all those living in and visiting our state; and WHEREAS fire is a serious public safety concern both locally and nationally, and homes are the locations where people are at greatest risk from fire; and WHEREAS roughly two-thirds of home fire deaths resulted from fires in which no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms were present; and WHEREAS working smoke alarms cut the chance of life-threatening injuries in a reported fire in half; and WHEREAS Rosemead residents who have planned and practiced a home fire escape plan are more prepared and will therefore be more likely to survive a fire; and WHEREAS the Los Angeles County Fire Department are first responders who are dedicated to reducing the occurrence of home fires and home fire injuries through prevention and protection education; and WHEREAS Rosemead residents are encouraged to follow public education measures and to take personal steps to increase their safety from fire, especially in their homes; and WHEREAS this year is the 100`h Anniversary of Fire Prevention Month and the 2022 Fire Prevention Month theme is "Fire Won't Wait. Plan Your Escape." serves to remind us of all of the simple actions we can take to stay safe from fire during Fire Prevention Month and year-round. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Rosemead City Council does hereby proclaim the Month of October 2022, as Fire Prevention Month.
