BC - Item 3A - Discussion of the 10th Annual Holiday Decoration AwardsROSEMEAD BEAUTIFICATION COMMISSION STAFF REPORT TO: THE HONORABLE CHAIR AND COMMISSION FROM: ERICKA HERNANDEZ, CITY CLERK DATE: OCTOBER 12, 2022 SUBJECT: 10TH ANNUAL HOLIDAY DECORATION AWARDS SUMMARY The Beautification Commission will discuss the award categories and gift options for the 10"' Annual Holiday Decoration Awards. To begin preparing for the 10"' Annual Holiday Decoration Awards, the Beautification Commission will discuss the award guidelines (Attachment A) and gift options. The Holiday Decoration Awards invites Rosemead residents and local businesses to submit nominations to the Beautification Commission, showcasing their civic pride and holiday spirit The Beautification Commission will judge participants on four categories with the grand prize to be awarded the Marie Spadaro Christmas Castle Award. City staff will contact the winners to inform them when they will be recognized. STAFF RECOMMENDATION That the Beautification Commission discuss and provide direction on the 10"' Annual Holiday Decoration Awards categories and prize choices. FISCAL IMPACT The City does not fund the Holiday Decoration Awards event. The Commission will seek donations from local businesses to assist with the ability to provide prizes to the winning participants. The event will be virtual this year; City staff anticipate a minimal expense of $600 towards prizes. Prepared by: Ericka Hernandez, City Clerk Attachment A: 2021 Holiday Awards Guidelines Attachment B: 2021 Holiday Decoration Award Flyer Attachment A 2021 Holiday Award Guidelines City of Rosemead Holiday Decoration Awards Guidelines • Only residences and non -residences, including businesses and non -profits, excluding City facilities, within the City of Rosemead are eligible for nomination. • Nominees must have no active code enforcement or other related issues with the City of Rosemead. • City of Rosemead employees including Council Members, appointed officials and their immediate families are not eligible. • To be eligible, a prospective nominee must apply no later than 5:00 p.m. on the designated due date as determined by the Beautification Commission. To apply, send an email with your name, address, phone #, and one or two photos of the property to BeautifyingRosemead@cityofrosemead.org. • Scoring and photography will take place on the dates indicated in the announcement. Nominees should have their decorations completed and lit (as appropriate) from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on those days. • The winners will be determined by the highest average score in each of the categories, except for the Marie Spadaro Christmas Castle Award, which is not scored separately, and will be determined by the highest overall average among all other categories combined. In the event of a tie in any category, the winner will be chosen by a majority vote among all Beautification Commission members present at the December meeting. • No nominee shall win in more than one category. • City staff will contact the winners to inform them when they will be recognized.. • The Award categories and their descriptions shall be as follows: Enchanted Entryway - Show your spirit with a warm holiday welcome to your home. We're looking for inviting doors and entryways that set the tone for the holidays. The Festivity Award - Cultures around the world celebrate festivals of light in winter. Dazzle and delight us with lights that capture the warm glow of the holidays. Celebrating Tradition —Winter celebrations worldwide make the season special. Delight us with decorations that honor cultural and religious traditions or your own own personal twist. Examples include a manger scene, menorah or kinara. Christmas with a Twist - This category encourages a whimsical theme especially geared toward children. Be creative. Think about what would have thrilled you when you were a child. The Spirit Award (Marie Spadaro Christmas Castle Award) -Who brought out the holiday spirit the best? Think sleigh bells, candy canes, evergreen wreaths, Currier and Ives. This is our grand prize, based on scores in all other categories.
