PKC - Item 3B - May 2023 Monthly Department ReportROSEMEAD PARKS COMMISSION MEMORANDUM TO: THE HONORABLE CHAIR AND PARKS COMMISSION FROM: TOM BOECKING, DIRECTOR OF PARKS & RECREATION DATE: May 2, 2023 SUBJECT: MONTHLY DEPARTMENT UPDATE AQUATICS Spring Aquatics Programs - Aquatics current ongoing programs are Lap Swim, Aqua Fit, Adult Swim Lessons, and our Rosemead Rapids Swim Team. Lap Swim - Swimming is the best full body workout. Lap Swim takes place Monday through Friday 5:30pm — 8:30pm and Saturday 10:00am—12:00pm. Aqua Fit — Water fitness is a great way to exercise. Come join our Aqua Fit class on Monday and Wednesday 5:00pm — 5:40pm Swim Team — is currently practicing Monday through Friday 5:30pm — 8:30pm and Saturday 8:00am — 10:00am. Rosemead Rapids ended the month of April with 145 participants registered. Rentals — Rosemead High School started using Rosemead Aquatic Center for swim practice this week. Rosemead High School and San Gabriel High School are both using the Rosemead Aquatic Center for practice and competitions for the 2023 swim season. Lifeguard Training — Aquatic staff, along with Human Resources, are currently working on recruiting for Summer of 2023. We are looking to hire Aquatic Attendants, Lifeguards, Lifeguard/Swim Instructors, and Assistant Pool Managers. In an effort to fill these positions, aquatic staff are preparing to host lifeguard training courses on May 12— 14 at the Rosemead Aquatic Center. This course provides participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies. Participants who attend all sessions of this course will obtain their American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification First Aid and CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer valid for 2 years. FACILITIES/PARKS Playschool — Registration for Playschool started on March 13, 2023. Spring Playschool runs from March 27th to June 1st for both locations. Garvey Center hosts Playschool from 8:30am — 11:30am and 12:30pm — 3:30pm. Rosemead Park hosts Playschool from 8:30am—11:30am. Parks Commission Meeting May 2, 2023 Page 2 of 4 Garvey Community Center Senior Craft Class — The Garvey Community Center hosted its senior craft class on Monday, April 10th, during which each participant made an Easter -themed sock bunny craft. In total, twenty-four seniors took part in the activity. The next craft class will be on Monday, May 8th, from 12:OOpm to 1:OOpm. Senior Bingo — On April 3, 2023, the Garvey Community Center hosted its monthly Bingo Social. The activity included snacks and a beverage for each participant. General winners took home a $5 gift card, and the overall bingo winner took home a $20 gift card to Target. In total, twenty-four seniors took part in the program. Senior Lunch Program Enhancements — The Senior Lunch Program has been a staple in the lives of seniors in the Rosemead community. The program supplies prepared nutritious onsite meals to seniors who participate in the program. Not only is the food delicious, but the program gives them an opportunity to socialize and make new friends. The program will now offer free games to check out coloring books for adults, and classic television shows for everyone to enjoy. The program enhancements will begin May 1, 2023, and will be offered Monday through Friday from 11:OOam to 12:30pm at the Garvey Center. Senior Spring Breakfast Social — The Garvey Center's Spring Breakfast Social took place on Thursday, April 6th from 9:OOam to 11:30am. The breakfast included spring -themed decorations and musical entertainment by everyone's favorite entertainer, Bobby Z. The Breakfast featured a menu of pancakes, ham and eggs, potatoes, and sausage. The event concluded with a raffle of prizes which were donated by the senior clubs who meet at the Garvey Center. Approximately 100 seniors participated in the Spring Senior Breakfast Event. SPECIAL EVENTS Easter Egg Dive — On April 1, 2023, from 12:OOpm — 2:OOpm, we held our first ever Easter Egg Dive. Rosemead Aquatic Center was filled with colorful eggs, easy for participants to jump in the water and collect. This event also included game booths, arts and crafts, and a bunny sighting. Participants had the opportunity to find a golden egg and get a special prize. Easter Eggstravaganza — On April 8, 2023, we held our annual Easter Eggstravaganza event. This event is geared towards children aged 2 — 13 years old. Egg hunts were split into the following categories: 2 years and under, 3 — 4 years old, 5 — 6 years old, 7 — 10 years old, and 11 — 13 years old. This event included egg hunts, games, and photo opportunities with the bunny. Memorial Day - This year's Memorial Day event will take place on Monday, May 29, at 10:00 a.m. Join us, as the City of Rosemead will honor the men and women who have ensured our freedom by serving this great nation in the armed forces. This year's ceremony, which will include the Presentation of Colors, placing of the wreaths, and a performance of Taps, will take place in the Civic Center Plaza. This event is free and open to the public. 2 Parks Commission Meeting May 2, 2023 Page 3 of 4 ADULT/YOUTH PROGRAMS AND SPORTS Youth Basketball League —The Summer Youth Basketball League opened registration on Monday, April 17th and sold out within 2 days for Divisions B, C, and D with 40 participants in each division. Division A is halfway and is expected to fill up by the start of the season. We currently have 46 people on the waitlist for Divisions B -D. City Staff are currently working with the school district for additional gym availability to hopefully expand the league by adding more teams to accommodate the waitlist. The League is scheduled to begin on June 12th. Adult Basketball League - The Winter 2023 Adult Basketball League concluded their season on Sunday, March 19th with Team Yellow Force winning back -to -back-to-back Championships! Team Yellow Force will be taking this season off; however, we were able to replace their team with a new team from the waitlist. The Spring season has a full 8 teams in the league and began their new season on March 25th. Youth Futsal League — The Youth Futsal League is almost halfway through their season, and we have a total of 100 participants and 10 teams in the league. Practices began on March 13th and games began on March 25th. Practices are held Monday through Thursday between 5:30pm to 9:30pm at Garvey Intermediate School, and games are held between 9:00am and 1:00pm at Garvey Park Gym. Pitch, Hit, and Run — Our annual MLB Pitch, Hit and Run Local Competition event was hosted at Garvey Park on Friday, April 14th from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. We had 18 participants attend the event, during which they participated in a skills challenge in pitching, hitting, and running the bases. For each category, points were awarded and the player with the best score won. Winners were then entered into the MLB database and have an opportunity to be invited to the Team Championship round and winners from the Team Championship round will be invited to the All-Star game to participate in the Championship round. This event is free for kids ages 7-14 years old. Volleyball League — Our NEW Adult Volleyball League will kick off their season on Sunday, June 25. Games will be played on Sunday evenings at Garvey Park Gym between 6:30pm and 930pm. Registration will open May 22. League fees will be $275 per team and include an eight -game regular season schedule with 1' round playoffs and championship round for qualifying teams. MISCELLANOUS Garvey Paws Dog Park - Garvey Paws Dog Park officially opened to the public on Monday, March 13th. Dog owners and their furry friends were very excited to have a place to run, play, and socialize! The dog park is open daily from 7am to dusk (except Thursdays when it is closed from 7:00am — 9:00am for maintenance). The dog park consists of 2 separate yards for large and small dogs, benches, shade structures, water fountains, and play structures. 3 Parks Commission Meeting May 2, 2023 Page 4 of 4 Youth in Government — Through the Youth in Government program, students in Rosemead will get a first-hand look at how government works. The program is designed to get students involved in government on a local level. The program took place on both March 23rd and April 13th. On the first day, selected students participated in a Shadow Day, shadowing City Officials and staff from 3:OOpm to 6:OOpm. The second day of the program is a full day, from 12:OOpm to 7:OOpm, during which students took a City Tour and held a Mock City Council meeting in the Council Chambers at City Hall. Subjects addressed each day included matters such as community engagement, decisions on infrastructure, and budget. The Youth in Government Program builds political acumen and self-confidence through public speaking and interaction. The Youth in Government program received 11 applications for this year's event. The Youth Advisory Committee — The Committee was created to facilitate advising City Council on matters pertaining to youth, promoting efforts that improve the welfare of Rosemead youth, educating the community regarding youth -related issues, and providing information about available services, resources, and programs. Recommendations for Youth Advisory Committee members were announced at the City Council Meeting on February 28th. Selection criteria for Youth Advisory Committee interviews included a complete application, and the following age and grade criteria: committee members must be current 7"' — 12th grade students, ages 13 to 18, and must reside in Rosemead. City Council Selected the following youth applicants for committee members: Richard Chang, Yixuan Li, Frank Luong, and Alton Wu. Volunteer Program — Currently the department does allow for volunteers in our various programs. Those interested in volunteering must fill out an application, sign a waiver, and be fingerprinted. 4
