CC - Item 5E - Appointment to the Youth Advisory CommitteeROSEMEAD CITY COUNCIL STAFF REPORT TO: THE HONORABLE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL FROM: BEN KIM, CITY MANAGER_ DATE: NOVEMBER 14, 2023 SUBJECT: APPOINTMENT OF THE YOUTH ADVISORY COMMITTEE SUMMARY The City has continued to solicit applications for the Youth Advisory Committee, which will advise the City Council on matters pertaining to youth. The Youth Advisory Committee is overseen by the Parks and Recreation Department and will submit an annual update to the City Council. Staff recommends that the City Council appoint the candidates that are listed in this report. DISCUSSION At the September 27, 2022 meeting, the City Council approved that the reestablished Youth Advisory Committee would be responsible for the following: • Advising City Council on matters pertaining to youth, • Promoting efforts that improve the welfare of Rosemead youth, • Educating the community regarding youth -related issues, and • Educating Rosemead youth and their families about available services, resources, and programs. There are currently four members of the Youth Advisory Committee which represent Rosemead High School. All exemplify great qualities that benefit the Youth Advisory Committee and the City of Rosemead. The Department continues to recruit for the vacant positions on the Committee and has successfully identified two additional applicants for your consideration. Kristen Kim Kristen is currently a freshman at Rosemead High School. Kristen believes that one area the Advisory Committee could address is teen mental health. As part of the Committee, she hopes to make the environment in our community more positive by providing educational opportunities and events. AGENDA ITEM 5.E City Council Meeting November 14, 2023 Page 2 of 2 Kyan Chau Kyan is currently a senior at Rosemead High School. She is concerned about the lack of career support and higher-level education advising in the City of Rosemead. She is interested in providing outreach to local elementary and middle schools to provide more information on college education and higher learning. STAFF RECOMMENDATION Staff recommends that the City Council approve the appointments of Kristen Kim and Kyan Chau to the Youth Advisory Committee. FISCAL IMPACT Only staff costs are anticipated in association with Youth Advisory Committee activities. These will be absorbed within the current Parks and Recreation Department Budget. STRATEGIC PLAN IMPACT The project is consistent with the Strategic Plan's Goal B of Responsive and Inclusive City, included under step 2 Actions, as a guiding principle for continuing to provide quality services that are inclusive and responsive to meet the challenging needs of the diverse community.
